25 March is International Waffle Day!
With heart-shaped waffles as a symbol of love, International Waffle Day is celebrated exactly nine months before Christmas. It actually marks the Feast of the Annunciation, known in Swedish as ‘Vårfrudagen’,
which sounds similar to ‘Våffeldagen’, meaning ‘Waffle Day’.
This phonetic similarity in the Swedish language, combined with the heart as a fitting symbol for
the event being celebrated, gave rise to Waffle Day. It is now celebrated in many countries where heart-shaped waffles are popular. Waffle Day thus became ‘International Waffle Day’.
However, this is not the only waffle-themed holiday. Alongside International Waffle Day, ‘National Waffle Day’, which originated in the USA, is celebrated on 24 August. In contrast to the heart-shaped waffle of International Waffle Day, National Waffle Day primarily celebrates square waffles such as the Brussels waffle.
